Even though car accidents are called “accidents,” the reality is that most collisions are preventable. What does this mean? It means that the majority of traffic accidents are the direct result of driver error, with the exception of automotive defects because those can cause serious, if not fatal accidents as well.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), “Most crashes in Texas result from speeding, failure to yield, driving under the influence of alcohol, following too closely and running red lights and stop signs.”
Tips on Avoiding a Collison
As we mentioned above, most crashes are preventable. To help you and your passengers stay safe and accident-free while you’re behind the wheel, follow these tips:
- Slow down
- Do not drive too fast for conditions
- Be friendly behind the wheel, avoid road rage
- Do not drive when angry
- Be courteous to other drivers
- Before entering an intersection, look both ways
- Use your signal every time you turn and change lanes
- Stop when you arrive at red lights and stop signs
- Never driver if you’ve been drinking alcohol
What if I’m in a Crash?
Each state has laws on the books about what drivers must do if they are involved in a car accident. In Texas, if you’re in a crash, do NOT flee the scene of the accident. Not only is that illegal, but the other driver or passengers may be hurt and you stoping for a pedestrian can mean the difference between life and death.
Under Texas law, if a driver is in a collision, they are required to 1) check if anyone was hurt, 2) if anyone was hurt to call an ambulance or ensure they get medical care, 3) move their vehicle out of the road (if possible) and exchange names, phone numbers, VIN numbers, plate numbers, insurance, and driver’s license information, and 4) make a note of where the crash occurred and get the contact information of any witnesses.
