Can I Get SSDI & SSI at the Same Time?

If you have become disabled and now your medical condition is keeping you from working and providing for yourself or your family, or both, you may be seriously considering applying for Social Security Disability (SSDI) benefits, as you should! SSDI benefits can help disabled workers provide for their basic needs, which is essential when someone cannot physically work because of their disability.

If you’re approved for disability benefits, the question is, “Am I eligible for any other types of benefits as well?” This is a good question since you should explore all of your available options.

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), when someone is receiving disability benefits, they still may be able to get other benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI). You see, if your income and resources are low, you may qualify for SSI, a federal program that provides monthly benefits to individuals who are blind, disabled, or age 65 and older.

What About Workers’ Compensation?

Workplace injuries and occupational diseases are extremely commonplace and they often lead to such severe disabilities, the injured or ill worker cannot work for an extended period of time. If you were injured in a workplace accident, you may qualify for workers’ compensation benefits and SSDI benefits, but can you receive both at the same time?

You can receive both types of benefits; however, your disability benefits may be reduced if you also receive workers’ compensation benefits, or if you receive disability benefits from another local, state, or federal government program. You must tell the Social Security Administration if you apply for another type of disability benefit, if you receive a lump-sum benefit or another disability benefit, and if your other benefits stop or change.
