Does Uninsured Motorist Cover Pedestrians?

Every state requires that drivers purchase auto insurance as a condition of driving and registering their vehicle. Some states also require that drivers purchase uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage, while other states require that insurance companies offer it and if policyholders don’t want it, that they reject it in writing.

In Texas, you are not legally required to buy uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, but insurance companies are required to offer it to you. Uninsured/underinsured coverage is valuable coverage because it helps cover your medical bills and property damage if the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured, or if you’re struck by a hit and run driver.

Are Pedestrians Covered?

“What if I’m a pedestrian and I’m hit by one of Texas’ thousands of uninsured drivers?” You may have your own health insurance, but it doesn’t seem fair for you to pay the hefty deductible, co-pays, and hospital bills, or use your PTO or dip into your savings to make up for your lost wages, now does it?

If you purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage for your own vehicle, it may cover you if you’re hit by an uninsured driver while you’re walking, in addition to while you’re driving. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is affordable and pedestrian coverage is one compelling reason to purchase it, just in case.

When considering buying uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, think about the statistics from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). “From 2008-2017, pedestrian fatalities increased by 35%. When combined, all other traffic deaths decreased 6% over the same period,” according to the GHSA. What’s more, over one third (35%) of pedestrian deaths take place in suburban areas.

If you were in a hit and run accident while driving or if you were hit by an uninsured driver while walking on foot and you have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, it’s worth your while to consider filing a claim with your own insurance company.
